Her Name Was Sawyer

I have found, now that I’m sitting down to write this post, that I don’t know what to say and overwhelming feelings of sadness aren’t conducive to writing. So this is going to be clumpy at best.

Babies are precious.

There is nothing, no matter how they come into the world, what they’re like, and most especially, how long they’re here with us, that can negate the fact that each and every one of them is beautiful and an amazing gift.

Sawyer, our cousin’s daughter, was a beautiful, amazing, and precious gift. She was a very much hoped-for and very loved little girl who was here for just three short days.

And I honestly don’t know what to say beyond that. When a baby dies, what do you say?

So, in place of my words, I’ll post the words of Sawyer’s aunt….

I thought I’d let you all know that my niece Sawyer was born Thursday. She was on earth for far too brief a time, but her time here mattered. She mattered. She was loved deeply. She was beautiful. She had dark hair and a button nose. She fought as hard as she could for as long as she could. She was born to two of the most incredible people you’ll ever meet. When my sister was pregnant, I would fantasize about chasing my niece up and down the beach. I’d picture her running to keep up with her older cousin. Tonight as the sun went down on the beach, my son and I wrote her name in the sand. I’m sharing this with you because I know many of you also know my sister and brother-in-law. Many of you have sent me messages asking if there’s anything you can do to help. Here’s what I was thinking: summer is around the corner. If you make it to a beach, or anywhere with sand or a spot to scrawl Sawyer’s name, feel free to do so, then send a picture. I’d love to make an album for my sister at the end of the summer. I think she’d enjoy seeing her daughter travel the world. Feel free to share this post. The more “Sawyers,” the better!

Even if you don’t happen to have a beach near you, please consider taking a picture for Sawyer. E and I have come up with some pretty creative ideas and I know the amazing people who follow my blog can do so also. You can email them to me at [email protected] and I’ll make sure she gets them.
