  1. Excellent work! You’ve inspired me as I finish up making final selections for next fall.

  2. I really appreciate all of your planning posts. I’ve been following along for a few years now and the time and effort you put into explaining how things are going for you and what works well and what doesn’t is very helpful! My boys will be starting years 4 and 2 this fall with their little brother tagging along for the ride.

This is so helpful! I’m starting CM for the first time this year and trying to decide which year my kids should be in. Do you mind sharing how old your son was when you did year 3? I’ve already bought all of the year 4 books but I’m thinking we should start with year 3 instead! My son is 9 and is completely uninterested in school so I feel like we’re starting from scratch with creating good habits (and attitude!). My daughter is 11 and very studious, even when it’s a subject she doesn’t enjoy. I wanted to have them in the same year because I think they’ll enjoy it more to be able to do it as a family but I’m just not sure! Any advice is appreciated!

    1. My son’s birthday is in August so he had just turned nine when he entered 3rd grade. If you’re looking at AO, there is a bit of a leap from Year 3 to Year 4 (they also offer a Year 3.5 for those not ready for Year 4), so that’s something to consider. There is a benefit to starting with Year 3 in that it’s a little easier and might be a good way to ease him into CM. Or, it might be good to start him in year 4 (if he’s ready) so he doesn’t have to make that adjustment from easier to harder later on. Or there’s Year 3.5 also. It really depends on the child. You could always dive into either one of those years and see how it goes. If he’s really struggling or speeding through it, you could try switching to the other year to see if that’s a better fit. I hope that helps!
