I’m curious, as I’m not sure how it works really, but how does one incorporate recitation and memorizing poems if the kids can’t read?

I think those are the only places I feel like I’m not quite grasping the curriculum that CM lays out.

    Thanks 🙂

    1. My son isn’t reading yet and the way we did it last year was lots of repetition. So we would focus on one poem per month during our Morning Time (you can read about it here: http://ahumbleplace.com/kindergarten-morning-time/) and we would say that every day. Of course at first he couldn’t say it with me, so I just read it outloud until he was able to say it along with me. I also used the poem for copywork and then after he finished his copywork page for the day, I’d read everything he had written out up to that point, so we repeated the poem then as well. By the end of the month, he could usually say it on his own. What I later added after I wrote that post was repeating poems we had already memorized during Morning Time as well. So we’d read our current poem, and then I’d go back and cycle through the other poems we had already read to keep them in our minds (just one per day).

  2. I enjoyed reading your plans for the year- Ambleside has such a great booklist for Y1! I also checked out your shop- my favorites so far are the “I am, I can” with the feathers and the “Never be indoors when you can rightly be without”, which I think I need to get as such an important reminder!! 🙂

  3. Hello there! I am halfway through our first year of homeschooling, and I am using your CM Kindergarten curriculum. We have been loving it! Do you have any plans to make this first grade curriculum available for sale in the same format? I can use this post as a general guide to plan out next year, but I loved your organization of the material, and would love to pay for it again for next year.

    1. Hi Tiffany! Unfortunately, I’m not able to offer any kind of schedule based on Ambleside Online’s curriculum as all of their material is under copyright and I can not reproduce it in any way.

  4. Hi,

May I ask what about T&T was concerning to you? I am about to start AO yr 1 and am in the process of ordering all the required reading, wondering if I should skip it as well…

    1. The first two stories were pretty violent and some later ones are as well. What I’ve done since then is pre-read them all and the ones I’m not comfortable with due to content, we skip, but we have actually ended up reading quite a few of them over the last four years. I hope that helps!
